11.15.05 The site's been moved (all behind the scenes, of course), and is due for an update. Stay tuned. 04.20.05 After a great road trip to New York, Ken returned to Vancouver and has a small studio in Ken Clarke's Hungry Thumb studio at 233 Main Street, where he continues to do mainly small assemblages and is actively collecting the rubble out of which he makes his art. Recovered from the fire was Ken's safe, including his slides, about two thirds of which survived. Ken has twice had the window at the new studio, first as an installation of burnt artifacts scavenged from the ruins, entitled "Out of the Fire" and visible in August and September of 2004; and again in February and March of 2005, for the only two large pieces he has done since the fire. Photographs of all the work will be forthcoming on the site. 04.28.04 Sad news last weekend. On April 25, 2004, a fire which began (or, as appears to now be the case, was started) in the alleyway behind the Ken's studio on West Hastings utterly destroyed the building. Gone, twenty years worth of memories and collecting, art making and art works; lost in the fire was the majority of Ken's work, including most of the pieces seen here on the website. Dark smoke filled the sky over downtown Vancouver, and was reportedly visible from as far away as White Rock. Ken says that he will continue making art, because "that's what I do." Documentation of the studio can be seen here. Also destroyed by the fire was the much loved Spartacus Books, and Cabbages and Kinx, a vintage clothing store. Both of these have been Vancouver landmarks for decades; and the upper floors of the building have been home to a number of different artists and projects over the years, including Artspeak, and the King Photography Studios. Ken is as of this writing heading off to New York for a month with partner Janis, driving their Buick, recently fortified with a "new" 455 engine. There will be further updates soon. 12.26.02 And a while it has been between updates, but here is the latest news. 01.24.02 Moved the site to this here domain name, kengerberick.com. You can email Ken at this address. 05.15.01 Yes, it has been a while since the last update--since the previous entry (last year), Ken has finished The Maliraq and is heading out on the road for a quick adventure to Regina, Saskatchewan, for the 2nd Annual Art Car Parade at the Cathedral Village Arts Festival. He will give a full report here when he returns (at the end of May). In the meantime, please feast your eyes on Photographs of the Maliraq. Also added here: a photograph from the Skinned Art Car show, held last November in memory of the Frivolous Niece. 12.31.00 The Sad End of the Dada Car & Meet the Maliraq--a photoessay. Happy New Year. 12.12.00 Updated the links page. Thanks to all who wrote with suggestions. 11.21.00 Ken's found a new car--a 1981 Blue Malibu, which has the unusual history of having orginally been designed for export (to Iraq, no less, where it was meant to go into service as a taxi). We assume that this means the car will have a big radiator (on second thought, isn't a lot of Iraq mountainous, and cold?) but whatever its intended destination, it now lives in Ken's garage, and is headed for an artistic future. Ken says that he intends to take his time with this car, rather than the breakneck speed (2 weeks) in which he constructed the Dada Car. No hints yet on the general theme of this project. And the name of this art-car-to-be? The Maliraq. Photographs and updates to follow. 11.12.00 **News Flash** R.I.P--The Dada Car The Dada Car was totalled on November 2, 2000, in Gibsons, B.C. Note: Not Ken's fault! A photohistory of the Dada car and the story of its sad demise will be coming soon. So will a new art car--Ken has already started planning a new car and will begin building asap. We will keep you all posted. Also coming up in the near future--photos of the Skinned Art Car Show (see below). The opening was a great success. Ken's upcoming solo show (his first in two years) Skinned Art Car: A Real Deconstruction, will be held at the DYNAMO Gallery, at 142 East Hastings Street, Vancouver. The opening will be Friday, November 10th @ 8 p.m., and everyone is invited. For more information you can call the gallery at 604.602.9005, email dynamo_gallery@hotmail.com, or email Ken here. For this show, Ken has "deconstructed" Frivolous Niece, his daily runner for a number of years. From car, to art car, to art: the transformation of a chevrolet. The other show that Ken is currently featured in is Spooky: A Scary Group Show (see below); the show closes November 12th. 11.06.00 Site is up at Geocities. I've added a hotmail address for Ken, so that he can access his email without having to go through my account. (Phone and fax numbers are on the Contact page.) So far, things seems to be working ok. The larger images do take some time to load; this is not unexpected. Site feedback to Ken would be appreciated. Once the final polishing of text, photo attributions, etc. is done we'll send out formal announcements. 10.26.00 Ken's work is now available through Smoke and Mirrors Publishing at www.smokinart.com, an online gallery specializing in "Unique Art and Artists." This is an extensive site showcasing a number of artists--there are 2 of Ken's paintings and 5 assemblages available for viewing/purchase. Take a look. 10.23.00 Ken also has work in Spooky: A Scary Group show with 25 other artists at the Tart Gallery, 1869 West 4th Avenue. The opening on October 28th (@ 7:00 p.m.) will feature music by DJ Malificent, a reading by Vortex, and prizes will be awarded for costumes. Tricks and Treats are also promised... The show runs until November 12th. Ken recently returned from the Art Car Fest in San Francisco--it was a busy September, between this and the Funky Art Car Festival here (Vancouver's first, organized by Michelle, aka The Gypsy Mermaid). (Some of the photographs in the Gallery section were taken at this festival.) Ken headed off for California the day after the Festival ended, and a great time was had by all.
